School Readiness: Beliefs about Preparing Children for Transition from Pre-primary to Primary Education in China
Cui, Shujing ; Greger, David (advisor) ; Straková, Jana (referee) ; Tesar, Marek (referee)
A smooth transition to primary school is positively related to children's later school experience. Continuity among family, Early Childhood Education and Care, and primary school is conducive to successful transition to school. Certain parental school- readiness beliefs and parenting styles, among other factors, contribute to the smoothness of this transition. Therefore, this study compared the school readiness beliefs among Chinese parents, kindergarten teachers and first grade teachers, based on samples drawn from Chongqing, China. 1204 Chinese parents, 245 kindergarten teachers and 133 primary school teachers participated in the current study. Using multi- group confirmatory factor analysis for checking the measurement invariance, this study revealed that kindergarten teachers valued social-emotional competence more than parents. And kindergarten teachers rated items about social-emotional competence significantly higher than primary school teachers did. Besides, this study adopted latent profile analysis to examine the patterns of Chinese parents' school-readiness beliefs. Three profiles were identified: (1) very strong overall emphasis and slightly less academic-oriented; (2) moderate overall emphasis and less academic-oriented; (3) no emphasis and more academic-oriented. Higher socioeconomic...

The theoretical part introduces the basic models of parenting styles and basic theoretical concepts connected to the pupils' school discipline, describes the changes in upbringing and pupils' school discipline in the course of time. The primary aim of the empirical part is to find out whether there are statistically significant differences in pupils' school discipline in relation to their parenting style. Another aim is to find out whether there is a statistically significant difference in discipline between the girls and the boys. In the research, which has a quantitative form, three questionnaires were used. These were: a questionnaire on parenting style, a questionnaire assessing the pupils' school discipline and a BFI-10 personality questionnaire. The questionnaire on parenting style was filled in by both the parents and the pupils in order to increase the validity of the research. The questionnaire assessing the pupils' school discipline was filled in by class teachers. The research sample consists of 117 pupils (from four elementary schools), 206 parents (115 mothers and 91 fathers) and 13 class teachers. The results of the research demonstrated that there is a statistically significant difference between the family's emotional relationships and the pupil's school discipline, and this was shown in the scale of discipline. No statistically significant difference between parenting control and pupil's school discipline was found in any category. In the unpreparedness for lessons and disruption of lessons categories a statistically significant difference was found in discipline between girls and boys - the girls are more disciplined than the boys in those categories. The analysis also revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between extraversion and the scale of discipline, a statistically significant negative correlation between agreeableness and telling lies, a statistically significant negative correlation between conscientiousness and cheating and last but not least a statistically significant negative correlation between openness to experience and the scale of discipline.
The use of modern communication technologies by children - comparison of educational approaches.
KAHLERTOVÁ, Jindřiška
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of parenting style on regulation of children's media use at home. The method used is meta-analysis in which come together 18 international studies on family, parenting style, children and media use. In the interpretation, the influence of parenting styles on the organization of children and the media was assessed as determining. From the quantitative and qualitative part, it comes out equally as the most suitable and the only right democratic parenting style. There is no significant concurrence of a positive emotional relationship and strong educational management in other parenting styles. It can be seen in the application of parenting styles in the Czech Republic that a relatively small proportion of adolescents are exposed to the positive influence of a democratic parenting style. In addition, the already well-known relationship between the number and placement of media in the home and problem of media usage were made visible in the analysis. There is also a very strong influence of long-term control on the rate and usage of media. Family relationships have a decisive influence on the understanding of control by the child. In families with unbalanced relationships and social situations, the primary prevention of problem of media usage may be neglected. Some shortcomings in the communication of children and parents regarding feelings of digital loneliness and their maturity to autonomous behaviour have proved interesting. These can lead to basic misunderstandings.
